How do I get my engineering license in Texas?

Earn the appropriate degree

In particular, every licensing process starts with earning the right degree. Engineering is no exception.

In the state of Texas, you are required to earn Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. For that, you must graduate from an engineering or engineering technology program. The program must be approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). It can also be a board-approved combination of a Bachelor’s degree and a graduate degree in engineering from a university (EAC/ABET accredited undergraduate program).

All engineering programs, as a rule, include the following educational material:

  • Calculus and differential equations
  • Mechanics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Electrical and electronic circuits
  • Materials science
  • Transport phenomena
  • Computer engineering

Pass the required examinations

  1. First you should take the Texas Ethics of Engineering exam. It is an open book examination, which touches on the Texas Engineering Practice Act and on the board rules/regulations. The exam is available to take online.

  2. Second you need to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination. It is a discipline specific exam and, consequently, you will take the exam in your main discipline.

    It is preferable to take the test in the last year of your program or sooner after graduating. In this way, not only will you remember the essential material, but you will also have higher passing chances.

    Note that you can only take the exam thrice within a year.

    In case you want to work as an entry-level engineer, passing this exam is a requirement.

  3. The next exam to take and pass is the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Examination.
    The examination assess your knowledge of engineering and tests your competency. Those engineers can take the exam, who have at least four-year professional experience.

Can you get a professional engineer license without an engineering degree?

If you have your Bachelor’s degree in a non-engineering domain, you may still get your professional engineer license. For this reason, they will have to check your educational background to understand whether it meets the standards for engineers.

However, if your degree is not acceptable, then you will need to earn a new in an ABET-accredited engineering program.
